A gazebo is a free standing structure. It has a rooftop that varies in shape and open walls on all sides. Hard evidence shows them being present around 1400 B.C.; but it is believed that they were present as early as 2600 B.C., if not earlier. People have used them throughout the years for different reasons and as we know they are also still used today.
The first sign of their use was with the Egyptians. They are said to have used them in their gardens and as temples, due to the civilizations’ belief that these structures would allow them to connect with their gods. The Romans and Greeks made them with marble and also placed them near temples and cathedrals in dedication to their gods. A short time after, Roman and Pompeian aristocracy also started building them for their summer homes. Due to this, these types of pergolas also began to symbolize status. Around the 10th century Persians used them near ponds or streams and made them very decorated and even two stories high. During the Middle Ages they gained popularity in France and England. Here their use came to integrate entertainment and resting spots as well. In Italy and during the Renaissance period the structures were adapted to allow panoramic viewing and were put on roof tops as well as inside buildings to offer more lighting and ventilation. Like the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians they also put them in monasteries; but here they were used to meditate and pray, not for connecting to gods. In Asia they were also used as tearooms and for resting. It is during this time that the term gazebo was created and began being used; as well as spreading even more to Europe. It finally arrived to America around the 1800s and was used for the same reasons mentioned above and more. When patios and porches were built with homes, they did lose some popularity; but not for long.
Today many homes have gazebos in their gardens, back yards, parks and buildings. There are so many types of gazebos that they can be used for many reasons. One type is a pop up gazebo, also known as a portable gazebo. It is used for homes, ceremonies, social gatherings and parties. It is easy to build and bring with; this is also why it is one of the most practical to have. Other types of these magnificent external structures are Amish gazebos. They are made by Amish artisans and are stupefying due to their uniqueness. The fact that they are hand made is what makes the one of a kind. They are just perfect for community parks, town squares, golf courses and majestic gardens. Not to worry though, if one wants standard designs, they can be made as well. A last option could be a hot tub gazebo or spa gazebo. These are wonderful for people who want to relax in the comfort of their home.
These pavilions come in many shapes and sizes. They are also made with different materials and various colors. The various materials that can be used are wood, vinyl, metal, and fabric. The wood is probably one of the most beautiful because of all the shapes and details that can be carved into it. Metal can be molded as well, but obviously being made of a different substance will also give it a different look. If one doesn’t like the rustic or more country look of wood, then metal or vinyl are probably better choices. Fabric can also give a lot of options and make the feel of this type of kiosk unlike the others. The only downfall to fabric is that it is not always totally waterproof.

These covers can help hold mosquitoes out or can make the structure like a solarium, by being made from a net or of glass. They can add to the already present Victorian or rustic style; but they can also help make it less elegant and a bit more simple. They can be big enough for a home wedding too. The county can have them installed to allow people walking in a park to relax or protect themselves from the rain. The uses are just endless and all great ways to embellish ones home or give to their citizens. As long as the choice is being made with the heart and with ones own ideas in mind, a gazebo can only improve and make more breathtaking the environment which it will fill.
